1- Splash.FM is the New Klout
If GetGlue is a spinoff of foursquare, then Splash.fm is certainly a spinoff of Klout. I’ll let this excerpt from TechCrunch explain the rest:
If Klout is your influence score across the web, Splash.FM wants to define the influence of your music taste. Users can “Splash” or favorite songs they discover on the site. Each song displays a Splash Lineage, or the order of who discovered it first. As a user’s shared songs are splashed by others, their Splash Score increases creating an addictive gamified experience.
I’m not sure if I’ll jump on board with Splash.FM, but I like hearing that “influences” across the web exist, and have gained credibility (at least enough to cause a spinoff). If anything, Klout is surely to stick around.
2-Wikipedia is Protesting!
If you have any random bits of information you need to know, better wikipedia them now because on Wednesday, you won’t be able to. And if you’re like me, you’ll forget and go to look up that one movie that guy from your guilty pleasure show was in, and boom. You won’t be able to and it’ll be painful.
To Protest SOPA and PIPA, Wikipedia is going dark on Wednesday, January 18th. Instead, wikipedia’s site will “be populated with a letter of protest and a call to action that urges readers to get involved with the issue.”
In all seriousness, this could be extremely effective for those opposed to the acts in consideration. It’s sure to bring a lot of criticism for those in support of them, too. I’m curious as to how it’ll pan out, tecnically and socially.
3- Facebook Shares Really Are Happening
I mentioned on this column a bit back that Facebook’s IPO was a rumored story coming to life. Here’s a further account of it– it’s now expected this May (I’m sure that will change more than twice). No matter when it is, however, we can all soon get in on the fun, and most likely witness one of the biggest IPOs of all time. Good deal.
