Whitney Houston (1963-2012)

I remember dancing around my bedroom singing into my hairbrush “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” in the late 80′s and wishing I was Whitney Houston. I was absolutely sure that my voice was identical to her, I loved her hair, that beautiful lilac dress that she wore.

Regardless of whether you followed Houston’s music career you will have come across her music either on the radio, at weddings or singing along at a karaoke party. For me I followed her career from the singing around my bedroom days and then into her foray into music soundtracks and starring in movies. The most popular of these is The Bodyguard, it’s a film that I still will watch whenever it’s on TV and I never tire of seeing it. The song “I Will Always Love You” is obviously the song people will most remember her for as it showed off her voice to stunning emotional potential. I also sung along when “It’s Not Right But It’s Ok” was released, she still had that voice. She could still capture an audience. I had even awaited her latest music and back in 2009 she was back and I have “Million Dollar Bill” on my most played list of her music on my iTunes.

Sadly she has been more known in recent years for filling pages in gossip magazines after her well documented drink and drug addiction. Her failed marriage to singer Bobby Brown also brought more heartache. Waking up to the news that Whitney Houston is no longer with us is of great sadness to me and her other fans around the world. She is one of the greatest singers that I have ever heard and it does make me sad to think I never got the chance to see her in concert.

I’m going to go grab my hairbrush and jump around on my bed and sing a long to my favourite Whitney track. “There’s a boy I know, he’s the one I dream of…”

I haven’t stopped singing ‘All At Once’ all day. Mariah is my one and only, and so in a weird display of loyalty to her that began when I was about ten, I would never admit to being a Whitney fan too. I had all her albums, listened to her a lot, but would just never say it out loud. It seems especially stupid now, because she really was amazing.
