Humble Grape to host an Australian Wine Tasting January 30 at the Haciendas Club.

London, U.K., (January 7, 2013) – Sunday the 26th of January is Australia Day and commemorates the arrival of the British First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. Join the Humble Grape for belated celebrations of this historic day: a homage to the Australian wine heritage, particularly to the French expat Jacques Lurton and his venture in Kangaroo Island and the native First Drop Wines from Barossa Valley to name but a few.

The Lurton family is one of the most celebrated wine making families in Bordeaux. Jacques Lurton knew he wanted to make wine in Australia from his formative years working with Brian Croser at Petaluma in the Adelaide Hills in 1985 and on his honeymoon discovered Australia’s third-largest Island, Kangaroo Island, some 70 miles south west of Adelaide in the Gulf of St Vincent. The vines on this rugged South Australian Island are cooled by the prevailing southerly winds from the Antarctic and the friable rich red ironstone soils afford the wines a unique sense of place. In 2000 Jacques Lurton planted a 11ha vineyard near Parndana in Kangaroo Island’s heartland and christened the estate ‘The Islander’. His pioneering views were met with enthusiasm in Australia and today The Islander Estate is one of the top wine brands in Australia. Here he’s found the climate and soil perfect for his beloved Semillon and Cabernet Franc vines.

For a £45 ticket, guests will be treated to 6 premium Australian wines from the cream of Aussie artisan producers: Jacques Lurton Islander Estate (Kangaroo Island), First Drop Wines (Barossa Valley & Mclaren Vale) and Carter Marybrook (Margaret River) accompanied by fine pairings of Spanish cured meats and cheeses. Our resident Australian winemaker Cameron (ex Innocent Bystander/Giant Steps, Yarra Valley) and the rest of the team will also be on hand to guide you through the beautiful wines.

The event will take place at The Haciendas Club on the banks of the Thames (Broken Wharf) from 6:30pm to 9pm on Thursday 30th of January 2014.
