Some Of The Most Common Scams To Be Aware Of

While most of us will think that we are savvy enough to avoid scams, there are clearly plenty of people who do suffer from scams. There are so many people trying to scam others that there must be some reward in it for them.

It is important that people don’t become too complacent when it comes to scams. This is why it is handy to be aware of some of the most common scams and what sort of format they arrive in. Being fully prepared to know what scams are available will provide people with the best chance of avoiding these scams and keeping hold of their money.

Typical scams to be aware of include:

Lottery wins

We all dream of winning the lottery and being able to transform our lives. The promise of a much better life is a key reason in why so many people want to believe that this sort of situation could be true. A lottery scam can take place in many different ways. It can occur over a phone call, a person can receive a text or they could even receive an email indicating that they are a winner in a lottery draw. This all sounds too good to be true and it usually is. If you haven’t bought a lottery ticket, you won’t be a winner in a lottery, that is one of the basic rules and premises of a lottery. No matter how good it would be to grab a big lottery win, if you haven’t bought a ticket for the competition, don’t be fooled into thinking that you have won a lot of money through a slice of good fortune!

The scam part of this process comes with the “winner” having to send money that is to cover administration or processing costs involved with the lottery. No true lottery would make such a request and it is important for people to be aware that this style of crime or activity is a scam.

Advance Fee Fraud

This is a style of fraud that many people will be aware of but it can come in many shapes and forms. This is currently the style of fraud that is most lampooned on comedy shows and situational comedies because on the surface of it, it all sounds quite ridiculous. However, it can be all too easy to take an email or letter request at face value.

This style of fraud will usually state that there is a chance to earn a lot of money in return for helping a person or cash to be moved from one country to another. In return for this support and assistance, the recipient is promised some of the cash. This type of scam will see the recipient receiving a request for bank details and once this request has been complied with, the fraudster will then raid their bank account. Sadly though, there is no return of cash at the end of the process.

This is the style of fraud that is regularly associated with a member of the Nigerian Royal Family due to a number of well-known scams of this nature.

Clairvoyants and Psychics

Some people would say that anyone asking for money to talk about people’s future is pulling a trick but there is a genuine scam involved with this sort of activity. People will receive an email, text or letter from someone claiming to be a clairvoyant making predictions about their life.

Some of the letters will say that the recipient will suffer dire consequences unless they pay a sum of money whereas others will inform the recipient that they will receive great news about their future if they pay money to hear the rest. Anyone who responds to this sort of request is guaranteed to receive some bad news in the near future because they will eventually realise that they have been conned out of cash and will have received nothing in return.

With so many people indulging and engaging in scams, it is easy to see why solicitors with great experience in representing people who have undertaken scams and fraudulent activities are in high demand. If you face charges of this nature, it is important to be as well represented as possible. This is why turning to a legal expert in this field makes sense and it will be of great benefit in the long run.

  1. Thanks for sharing this information. There’s some more dangerous phone scam tricks that usually used by those criminals, like tax related scam and debt collection scam. These is also old scam schemes, but I even found recent reports about them until today, at some complaint board sites, like I think the only thing that we can do is just spread the message to our family and friends about them, so that they will be able to protect themselves against these crooks.
