EP Review: Chrystyna Marie – Loaded Gun

Chrystyna Marie hails from Toronto, the classically trained singer has a great music background. From musicals, music videos and TV to lead singer in the LA founded pop group called Greencat – she’s done it all. Her real passion has always been back to her unique voice and releasing her own music. She has taken that opportunity with this EP ‘Loaded Gun’ and it was the right choice for her to make.

Her EP has a blues/rock mix to it but the beauty is her voice, it’s very gritty and powerful. She is working on a full album which means that this really is a taster of what is about to come from her. Her musical influences are Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Etta James and Christina Aguilera. I wouldn’t say that she fits into any of these as a comparison, she has a unique voice. I was a little reminded of KT Tunstall in parts though.

Chrystyna says “Breath is life, and life is music. I wanted to create music from personal experiences and true emotions. Something the everyday person can relate to and build strength from having been exposed to it. With a raw and gritty feel to emulate these experiences and emotions”

The EP listing;

  1. Loaded Gun
  2. Down The Road
  3. No More
  4. The Tower

The opening track and title for the album ‘Loaded Gun’ is a great introduction to her voice, it’s a very raw and open expression. There is almost a sensual feel to the song too and the chorus stays in your head, long after you have stopped listening to it. ‘Down The Road’ has a very western movie feel to it, can imagine it being on a movie soundtrack. The lyrics have a more startling feel to it though but it could definitely be in a movie for sure. This is more tying into the bluesy feel and showcases her voice perfectly. Then we move into ‘No More’ which takes us to a more pop feel and I guess if we are talking mainstream this would be the track that would appeal to more people. This track also lets Chrystyna show off a more tender side to her voice. The last track ‘The Tower’ has a real story to it and is a great way to end this EP but it really leaves you wanting more.

Overall I really loved this EP and can’t wait for her album. There is a lot here for blues and rock lovers and I think her voice is sure to capture the pop scene a little bit too.
