Zara Quentin is the author of Airwoman, the first book in the Airwoman series. She was raised in Adelaide, Australia, with one younger sister. Zara grew up with a strong sense of adventure, which she inherited from her parents, who took her and her sister on trips to the United States, Europe, and Asia.
She also inherited a love of reading from her mother. Throughout her childhood she explored fictional places through books, and in particular, through fantasy novels. She’d turn the black and white text on the page into the colourful worlds of her imagination.
After graduating from high school, Zara studied at the University of Adelaide and has lived in France, London, and Auckland, New Zealand. She is always determined to fit in as much travel as possible, spending time in Europe, the United States, southern Africa, Morocco, Peru, the Pacific and south-east Asia.
Zara now resides in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and three children. She is currently working on the next instalment in the Airwoman series.
The street opened out onto a square packed with market stalls. Hawkers lauded their wares, buyers haggled, and children ran about, causing general chaos. Some of the tension fell from her shoulders—Shamix might be a hidden city without a breath of wind or the sight of the sky, but this was a market. Jade might be on the other side of the Dragonverse, but a market was a market, the same as everywhere else.
As she pushed her way through the market, she bumped into a hawker. She stumbled, crying out as she jarred her injured shoulder. When she looked up, she gasped at the sight of a woman missing half her face.
“Watch where you’re going!” the hawker said, revealing her whole face with the flick of her hand as she removed the Reflette mask.
“Sorry, I—“ Jade started, but the woman had already turned away.
“Damned Nectar-crazies,” the woman muttered, replacing the mask.
Jade pressed a hand to her aching shoulder and gritted her teeth. She continued to follow in the direction Axel had taken, but she was barely on her feet before a cloaked figure stepped in front of her.
“You are hurt.” A voice spoke in a soothing, melodic tone. Jade couldn’t see her face under the hood. Jade tried to step around her, but the woman blocked her path. “Your shoulder causes you pain.”
Jade frowned, still clasping her injured shoulder.
“I have something that will heal you,” the cloaked woman continued.
Jade gritted her teeth. “I doubt it.” What she needed was the rare Traveller medicine that Neve had spoken about, but she couldn’t just waltz up to an official Healer Centre and demand it. They’d ask too many questions.
She still had some of Namaje’s mortisberry paste in her bag, but she would have to wait until she was in their rooms at the inn before she applied it again.
“What I have to offer will ease any pain; it will heal any hurt. A true miracle from the Dragon-Gods.”
“I’m not buying.”
The folds of the woman’s cloak parted to reveal a hand, facing palm up and holding a small capsule containing red and gold liquids that swirled, but never merged.
“The Nectar of the Gods.” The woman’s voice dripped with promise.
The woman’s words rang in her head. Ease any pain; heal any hurt.
Jade’s shoulder throbbed.
“What price?” Jade whispered.
