With the end of Smallville and the demise of the ill-fated Wonder Woman pilot, there is a distinct lack of live action superheroics on our TV screens. Luckily for us then, that there are two series’ based on DC properties in varying stages on development.

American network, The CW is first off the mark with Arrow, based, unsurprisingly, on DC’s Green Arrow. Despite this character having already made a lengthy and memorable appearance on Smallville, The CW claims that this new version will exist in a separate continuity. Green Arrow/ Oliver Queen has been recast with Stephen Amell taking the role.

The first image from The CW's Arrow - dark and edgy enough?

The network has taken great pains to distance this new show from its predecessors, and even its source material. The vice-president of development at The CW claims “It’s very provocative and sophisticated and edgy. It’s not as comic book-y as Smallville or other [superhero projects] from other networks.” The obsession with dark and gritty spins on superheroes is wearing pretty thin at this stage, and we all have Christopher Nolan to thank for that. I’m having a bit of trouble visualising how edgy a guy who shoots trick arrows can realistically be, and I think Oliver Queen’s origin story and early career has been pretty well covered by Smallville. The good news is that Dinah ‘Laurel’ Lance, better known to comic fans as Black Canary, has also been cast as a love interest. Let’s just hope that should this pilot get picked up, she’ll graduate to full on superheroics herself, and not just become Queen’s constantly imperilled girlfriend. Oliver and Dinah are without a doubt my favourite superhero couple and I’d love to see that relationship done well on television.

Syfy also recently revealed the projects they are developing, and among the inevitable reality fare, there was the exciting inclusion of a Booster Gold pilot. For those unfamiliar with the character, Booster Gold is a washed up athlete from the future, who travels back in time and attempts to become the world’s greatest superhero, but is more concerned with fame and fortune than justice. The character had a well-received appearance in the cameo-laden final season of Smallville and is a fan favourite for his humour and overall likability.

Booster Gold in Smallville

One possible stumbling block for this show, however, is that the writer and executive producers both worked on the aforementioned Arrow. This could be a good thing, meaning they’re already in the comic book mindset. Or, it could mean that they’ll take that fervent desire for the ‘provocative’ and ‘edgy’ and stamp it all over a character than is definitely, gleefully, neither of those things. Only a script has been ordered so far, so it may never even see the light of day. But Booster Gold is such a unique character, with tons of charm and potential that it’d be a shame to see this fall by the wayside.

With these two projects in development, it’s almost impossible to predict who’ll be next for the TV treatment – any guesses?

The Avengers movie or Avengers Assemble as it was released in the UK was a long time in the making. Ever since I first read about my Marvel heroes as a child I wanted to see them together. Assembled is actually a good term used for the way the movie was put together. Placing so many characters and indeed actors in the same film ‘could’ have failed. Balancing screen time and character plots is a massive strategic decision especially when they are dealing with comic heroes.

‘The Avengers’ is more than one film, already we have had Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Incredible Hulk and Captain America: The First Avenger. These films were the starting point to expand this series further, people watched these and those who “knew” were aware that a full Avengers film was coming. My son was less interested in seeing Thor when he saw the trailer but I explained that this was more than one film. After we came out of the cinema from ‘Avengers Assemble’ he told me “Thor is my new favourite Dad”. It used to be Iron Man.

Marvel have done very well with their big screen movies which brings me onto DC Comics, could they do the same with the Justice League? In terms of doing it, of course they could. To copy Marvel’s approach they would need to set up the background movies which some have already been done, Green Lantern for example. This however was not widely received and could put people off before they have even begun. There is also the point as to how they could get Batman and Superman on-screen in the same movie. Batman is now seen to the viewer as the dark enigmatic Bruce Wayne that Christian Bale plays in the Christopher Nolan films. His character would need to change to fit into a Justice League format with Wonder Woman and Green Lantern.

There is also the ultimate film for me which would see Marvel take on more of their own characters with Ghost Rider, Spider-Man and X-Men amongst my favourites for a movie twist with The Avengers. Before we even think anymore about what DC could do, Marvel are telling us what they are planning with Iron Man 3 due for release early May 2013 and Thor 2 and Captain America 2 to follow. There has been speculation of a Black Widow and/or Hawkeye movie with their stars Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner successful box office stars.

I would love to see a Justice League movie but for now there is more than enough with the Marvel movies. But would like DC to try to get in on the action a bit more. We will need background movies if it is to happen, the only way DC can get people to go is for the viewers to know these will all be linked together. You miss a film so you miss part of the story. Keep the viewer hooked and it is box office success for you.

Would you like to see a Justice League movie?

As a photographer, I always love to read photography magazines to get ideas on how to take new types of images or tips to improve my current skills. Currently on the market there are many different types of photography magazine ranging from beginners to experienced levels. It can be very daunting buying a magazine when there are so many to choose from, as they aren’t cheap and sometimes you want to ensure its suited to you. My two favourite magazines are Photography for Beginners and Digital SLR Photography. Here is a brief overview of each magazine, and why I believe they are the best out there:
