Many of you will have heard of the movie ‘Chocolat’, it was based on the book of the same name, written by Joanne Harris. She is a fave of mine and I had the pleasure of reading her books before the movie hype. Whilst highly recommending you read ‘Chocolat’, it’s another one of her books that captured me the most.
The book is called Blackberry Wine. It is about a man on a voyage of discovery, his companion a home-made brew of somewhat potent properties. The journey takes you from London to a derelict farmhouse in a small French village. Joanne has a mystical quality to her writing. I find myself swept along with her dialogue, captivated by her vivid descriptions. You taste, smell and visualise clearly her tale. It twists and turns, yet throughout that faithful bottle of blackberry wine keeps time. This book made me want to visit France, make blackberry wine, escape the hamster wheel of life…..
