Sarah’s Bakery Corner – Cookies in a jar

Everyone loves cookies don’t they?

They can also make the perfect gift. Cookies in a jar 🙂

Putting all the dried ingredients into a jar (or other container of choice) and layered like the picture above is a great gift and has been growing in popularity by year.

I’ve received several cookie in a jars for Christmas, Birthdays and recently a friend’s baby shower she gave each guest a cookie in a jar set. It’s a lovely gift and easy to make too.

Some tips in making them;

– If you want a layered look then this is not going to work with a white sugar and white flour recipe. Contrasting colours and textures create layers. Think of sand art. My favourite has to be smarties or m&m’s for that really colourful look 🙂

– Most recipes will fit into a l litre jar but only if you press down the ingredients as tight as you can. Press down each layer as much as you can. White sugar is best to be at the bottom as it tends to seep through any chocolate chips, or candy items.

– Don’t forget to attach a recipe to the jar. Keep it simple. Although it is so simple with just an egg needed and a couple of tablespoons of water. Simple is best.

– Attach coloured ribbon around the jar neck for an extra touch if it’s for a particular theme; ie. baby shower (pink/blue). Also my favourite at Christmas use red or green ribbon and attach a Christmas themed cookie cutter tied to the jar. Another favourite is to attach a wooden spoon.

– If the jar is stored in a dry and cool place it will last for 6 months. Just make sure your expiry dates are not due to quickly expire on your baking powder etc. If you have nuts in the jar it will stay fresh for 3 months.
