Happy Valentine’s Day, fellow wafflers! I hope you’re feeling lovely, because I’m using my column this week to write about some of my heartache.
Mashable, I’m talking about you. Here’s my open letter to you:
Dearest Mashable,
I hate saying it, but I can’t go on much longer without acknowledging it: you’ve sold out.
You were once a great technology, gadgets and social media blog, but are now just another entertainment portal. This change occured quite rapidly, too, because I like to remember you as one of the few blogs which already had experience gushing over Apple products when the original iPad was revealed. You were a trendsetter then, not to mention rather sexy.
But now, you’re a media conglomerate. Yes, you do combine my passions in life, i.e., technology and culture, but you do so in predictable ways, silly ways. Gossip is rampant with you now, but no, not about when the iPad 3 will be revealed, but about what the majority of Twitter users thought of Madonna’s half time performance during Super Bowl XLVI.
Sigh.
The times have changed for you, Mashable, and I understand you’re trying to increase traffic and appeal to new audiences, but I’m still sad. Instead of finding tons of tech related stories on your site now, I have to dig through a lot of garbage to find them.
This just isn’t working out. It’s you Mashable, not me.
Case in point– here’s what you’re home page looked like at approximately 10pm EST, on 2/13:
I love the New York Knicks and everything about Linsanity, but this is ridiculous, Mashable. So is your story next to it, about last minute Valentine’s Day gifts.
You’ve broken my heart, Mashable. I might have to find someone else if you keep this nonsense up.
Regretfully,
Kimberly
