There seems to be an endless flow of these “chap with a guitar” type performers out there, but for some reason I stopped whenever this song came on the television or radio. I don’t know what it is that makes James Morrison different, but I do know that I adore this song, I love his voice and he’s a wonderful lyricist.
The video for this debut single was first released in 2006, and shows Morrison sitting in a studio performing. A second video was released in 2007 and shows Morrison performing for pedestrians in New Yorks Chinatown. The video shown in the link below is the Chinatown version.
Morrison has referred to this song as a “harsh love song”, and his intended meaning of the song is that he does not love the girl as much as she loves him, but he will give a relationship a try. I interpreted this song in a totally different way, I thought it meant that he was happy to risk getting hurt -as in he didn’t know if she felt the same way. The beauty of music and how we all read different things into it, isn’t it amazing?
This single was nominated for a BRIT award, and rightly so I feel. By the way, that picture of him above? Ding-dong.
