Ah, come on now. I love this song and I know you do too.
I have always been vaguely amused by the fact that one of the most successful and well loved Christmas songs ever is actually a heartbreaking song about being dumped on Boxing Day.
This song was released in December 1984, a double A side with “Everything She Wants”. The band missed out on the number one spot due to Band Aid. Wham were also involved in the project and so received royalties- but they actually donated all of the funds made by the royalties on Last Christmas and Everything She Wants to the Ethiopian famine appeal, making Band Aid even more successful.
The single was, and remains still, the highest selling record to have not reached number one. The band sold well over a million copies, but due to Band Aid never quite reached the top.
The video features Gary Kemp, of Eastenders and Spandau Balllet fame, as he was at the time Shirlie’s boyfriend, and after that her husband. Sweet!
The song has been covered more times than I care to mention. For me, it’s Wham or nothing, but I must say Whigfields cover is really lovely too
