God of War: Laufey Just Got Announced — and It Looks Like the Best Game of the Year

Sony just dropped one of the biggest gaming announcements of 2026, and if you’re a PlayStation fan you’re going to want to sit down for this one.

God of War: Laufey has been officially revealed at Sony’s State of Play showcase, developed by Santa Monica Studio for PS5. It is not a Kratos game. And honestly? That might be exactly what the series needed.

What is God of War: Laufey?

The game stars Laufey — also known as Faye — the warrior wife of Kratos, guardian of the Jötnar, rebel leader against the oppressive Aesir gods, and lone protector of the Wildwoods, whose battle prowess was legendary even among the Giants.

The official story synopsis reads: “Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey, warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk.”

To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the Gods — known as the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.

The Everywhen — what is it?

The Everywhen is described as the birthplace and endpoint to which all magic returns — a transcendent realm above those we’ve come to know, where gods and creatures from different mythologies come together, and not always in harmonious coexistence. The trailer already hints at Mongolian-speaking enemies, suggesting the game will explore mythologies well beyond the Norse and Greek worlds fans are familiar with — which is an incredibly exciting prospect.

The companions — including a cosmic cube

This is where it gets wonderfully strange. Faye will not be travelling alone. She meets two companions shortly after waking in the Everywhen: Phranque, played by Jack Quaid, who is described as “a curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition” who will do whatever it takes to protect his friends — and Rue, played by Perlina Lau, an enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with keeping a devastatingly powerful sword from falling into the wrong hands.

A talking cosmic cube as a companion in a God of War game. We are absolutely here for it.

Who plays Faye?

Deborah Ann Woll — best known for playing Karen Page in the Daredevil TV series — reprises her role as Faye, having previously voiced the character in God of War Ragnarök. She leads what looks like a genuinely strong cast, and the 20-minute gameplay reveal showed a protagonist with real depth and presence.

How does it play?

The combat builds on the strengths of the modern God of War system while injecting classic DNA from the Greek era. Faye has significantly more mobility than Kratos — mixing ground and air combat fluidly — and wields both a mighty sword and magic. Sony says her increased mobility adds “a ton of offensive and defensive tools to turn battles against even the fiercest gods to her favour.”

Santa Monica Studio describes the approach as combining the movement and fluidity of the Greek era with the Norse era’s approach to world-building and close ties with characters — “an experience that has given our team incredible opportunities to take exciting creative swings, while staying true to the pillars of the God of War series.” Wikipedia

When can you play it?

God of War: Laufey is coming to PS5 “soon” — no specific release date has been confirmed yet. Given the polish on display in the 20-minute gameplay reveal, it feels close. Watch the PlayStation social channels for further updates. yahoo

The bigger picture

This is a genuinely bold move from Santa Monica Studio. Stepping away from Kratos as the lead — even temporarily — is a risk. But Faye has been one of the most intriguing mysteries of the modern God of War era, her backstory carefully seeded across two games without ever being fully explored. Handing her the spotlight, dropping her into a realm that crosses multiple mythologies, and giving her a cosmic cube companion feels like exactly the kind of creative swing a franchise needs to stay fresh.

If the full game delivers on what today’s reveal promises, this could be something very special indeed.

With Grand Theft Auto VI also coming later this year, it’s a very exciting 2026 in the gaming industry.
