Is Instagram Actually Dying, or Are We Just Using It Wrong

Every few months, the tech commentary cycle hits the exact same loop. Instagram is dead. The algorithm is broken. Everyone has migrated to TikTok, Threads, or whatever app had a breakout week.

It’s a comforting narrative when your reach dips or an algorithm tweak shifts your numbers overnight. But if you look past the creator panic, the stats tell a very different story: Instagram hit three billion monthly users, making it one of the most resilient digital ecosystems on the planet.

So if the app isn’t dying, why does it feel harder than ever to get noticed?

The short answer: most of us are optimizing for the wrong things.

The Three Signals That Actually Move the Needle

Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, has been surprisingly transparent about how content distribution works across the app. Yet, creators and digital brands routinely ignore what he’s explicitly saying in favour of secret “growth hacks” sold by guru accounts.

According to Mosseri, three core metrics govern performance across the platform:

  1. Watch Time / Dwell Time: How long someone spends staring at or watching your post.
  2. Likes Per Reach: The percentage of people who see your post and actually double-tap.
  3. Sends Per Reach (DM Shares): How often your post is forwarded into private DMs or group chats.

For non-follower reach—the coveted “Explore” and “Suggested” pages—sends matter far more than likes. When someone sends your post to a friend, Meta’s system views that as the ultimate endorsement: genuine human relevance.

The Carousel Comeback

This shift in ranking signals explains why carousels have taken over feed performance.

While Reels dominated headlines for years, swipeable carousels naturally boost dwell time (because readers take longer swiping through slides) and drive higher save and share rates. For deep engagement and clear messaging, carousels are currently punching well above their weight compared to low-effort video clips.

Stop Chasing Formats, Start Serving Audiences

The takeaway isn’t that you should immediately delete your Reels and only post ten-slide carousels. The debate over formats misses the fundamental point: format is just the vehicle; your audience’s intent is the driver.

If you run a digital business or content brand, chasing whichever format had a good month is a trap. Instead, align your strategy with human behavior:

  • Is it shareable? Does it make people say, “I need to send this to [Friend]”?
  • Is it saveable? Does it offer enough immediate value that someone wants to bookmark it for later?
  • Is it sticky? Does it hold someone’s attention long enough to build watch time?

Instagram isn’t broken—it’s just demanding higher-quality, share-worthy content. Once you stop fighting the platform’s algorithm and start building for real connection, the numbers follow naturally.
