Stop Bleeding Profits: Why I Use Both Ko-fi and Gumroad for Digital Product Sales

When you spend hours writing an ebook, building a template, or creating a guide for your readers, setting the price is only half the battle. The other half is figuring out how much of that money you actually get to keep.

For years, Gumroad was the default recommendation for creators selling digital downloads. If you had a PDF, you put it on Gumroad. But as creator platforms have evolved, Ko-fi—which many still think of as a simple “buy me a coffee” tip jar—has quietly turned into one of the most cost-effective digital storefronts on the web.

I don’t use just one. For my digital product strategy, I run a dual strategy using both Ko-fi and Gumroad simultaneously. Here is why I do it, how the fees break down in the real world, and how you can stop bleeding profits on your side hustle.

The Real Math: Where Do Your Profits Go?

The biggest difference between Ko-fi and Gumroad isn’t the features—it’s the transaction math.

Gumroad charges a flat 10% platform fee + $0.50 per sale on direct transactions, plus standard credit card processing fees (~2.9% + $0.30).

Ko-fi’s base plan charges a 5% platform fee on Shop sales (and 0% on direct tips/donations). If you upgrade to Ko-fi Gold ($12/month), Ko-fi’s platform fee drops to 0%, leaving only standard Stripe or PayPal processing fees.

Here is what that looks like in practice when selling digital ebooks across different price points:

Product PriceGumroad Take-Home (Direct Sale)Ko-fi Free Take-HomeKo-fi Gold Take-Home
£3.00 (~$4.00) Micro-Guide£1.85 (40%+ eaten in fees)£2.28 (~24% total fees)£2.43 (~19% total fees)
£10.00 (~$13.00) Ebook£7.91 (~21% total fees)£8.91 (~11% total fees)£9.41 (~6% total fees)
£25.00 (~$32.00) Resource Bundle£20.97 (~16% total fees)£22.72 (~9% total fees)£23.97 (~4% total fees)

The Low-Ticket Penalty

Notice what happens on a £3 micro-guide: on Gumroad, between the 10% fee, the $0.50 flat charge, and payment processing, over 40% of your revenue vanishes. Gumroad’s flat fee heavily penalizes low-priced products. On Ko-fi Gold, you keep almost 81% of that same sale.

3 Reasons Ko-fi Is My Primary Hub

1. Instant Cash Flow

When someone buys a guide through my Ko-fi shop, the money is deposited instantly into my connected PayPal or Stripe account. Gumroad operates on a weekly payout schedule and holds funds until you meet a payout threshold. For freelancers managing monthly expenses, instant liquidity makes a massive difference.

2. All-in-One Content Landing Page

Gumroad feels purely transactional—it’s a storefront. Ko-fi functions more like a content hub. Directly on my Ko-fi page, I can:

  • Sell digital PDFs and guides in the Ko-fi Shop.
  • Share short written posts, behind-the-scenes updates, and links to full articles on dailywaffle.co.uk.
  • Let readers who enjoyed a free article drop a quick £3 tip without buying a full product.

3. Low Buyer Friction

Buyers don’t need to create a Ko-fi account to purchase a guide. They click the link, pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or a credit card in two taps, and get their instant PDF download link.

If Ko-fi Is So Cheap, Why Am I Still Using Gumroad?

If Ko-fi offers better margins and instant payouts, why not shut down Gumroad entirely? Because Gumroad provides one critical feature that Ko-fi doesn’t handle natively: Tax Compliance and Discovery.

        - Highest profit margins - Handles global VAT/Sales Tax
        - Instant cash flow - Built-in affiliate network
  • Merchant of Record (MoR): Gumroad acts as the Merchant of Record for your sales. That means Gumroad automatically calculates, collects, and remits digital sales tax and EU/UK VAT on your behalf globally. Ko-fi leaves tax settings up to you as a direct seller.
  • Gumroad Discover: Gumroad’s internal search directory and recommendation engine bring in organic sales from buyers who have never heard of dailywaffle.co.uk. Even though Gumroad takes a higher cut (up to 30% on Discover sales), a sale from a stranger you wouldn’t have reached otherwise is still net-positive revenue.

How to Run the Hybrid Strategy

If you want to maximize your side hustle profits without losing out on global tax coverage or discovery, run both:

1.Send Owned Traffic to Ko-fi: Capture maximum profits from your loyal audience.

Whenever you link to an ebook or guide directly inside an article on dailywaffle.co.uk, in your email newsletter, or in your social media bios, use your Ko-fi Shop link. You brought the reader, so you should keep 90%–95% of the revenue.

2.Use Gumroad for Marketplace & Global Sales: Let the platform handle complex international compliance.

Keep your products listed on Gumroad as well. Let Gumroad handle buyers coming through search engines, marketplace discovery, or regions with complex digital VAT laws.

3.Upgrade to Ko-fi Gold when the math works: Reinvest profits once volume increases.

Once you earn more than $240/month (~£190/month) in store sales on Ko-fi, the 5% platform fee exceeds $12. At that exact tipping point, upgrading to Ko-fi Gold ($12/mo) pays for itself immediately and drops your Ko-fi platform fees to 0%.

The Bottom Line

Don’t let platform default settings dictate your margins. If you have an established blog, publication, or social following, sending all your readers to a platform taking 10%+ plus flat fees per transaction is simply leaving money on the table.

Use Ko-fi to convert your direct readers into instant, high-margin revenue, and keep Gumroad in your toolkit as a secondary automated storefront.
