When we talk about iconic videos, I think we all know this one just has to be in here.
The music video was directed by British photographer Terence Donovan (famous for his fashion photography in the 1960’s), and was one of the most iconic of the era. The models are styled to look like mannequins and have a ‘robot’ like expression. The models are Julie Pankhurst, Mak Gilchrist, Patty Kelly, Julia Bolino and Kathy Davies. The models make up and expression is based on Patrick Nagel paintings (he’s the fella who drew the lady on the cover of Duran Durans ‘Rio’ album.
Mak Gilchrist says that they were quite tipsy when they were performing and whilst having her make-up retouched, she stumbled off her heels, whacking her guitar into the back of Palmer’s head and he in turn smacked his forehead into his microphone. Smooth. Palmer also used the ‘model’ concept for “I Didn’t Mean To Turn You On’ and “Simply Irresistible”.
VH1 state that a musician was hired to teach the models basic guitar fingering techniques but gave up after an hour as they just couldn’t get the hang of it at all.
Interestingly, this was meant to be a duet between Palmer and Chaka Khan, but she couldn’t get release from her record label to sing with Palmer.
