My goodness me, this takes me back. What a blast from the past! I was in the car and it came on suddenly and I hadn’t heard this tune for years. Now, the intro annoys the hell out of me, I’ve never been a fan of warped voices on tracks anyway- but if you ignore that and just listen to the main part of the song, I think it’s actually brilliant. Really catchy riff and great lyrics “There’s a fire between us, so where is your God?”
The was actually the bands first single, and went straight to number 1 in the UK on 21 January 1996. It’s success is often felt to be attributed purely to the song’s use in a Levi jeans advert in late 1995, and Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called the song a “bizarre, tuneless collage of hip-hop rhythms, techno keyboards and alternative guitars” and that nothing about the song happened to make it memorable. I feel that this is a bit unfair considering what a hit it was, but there we are.
The dreadful speeded up intro to the song was actually added after the final cut of the song was made, as the controversial lyrics ” I killed your Mother, I killed your Sister, I killed you all” were felt to be a bit wrong and so were removed.
There are three things I shall never understand about this song: The intro, the video, and why Katie “Something about Bicycles” Melua did an acoustic cover version. Anyway. Enjoy!
