As Nocturne ventured on, it took a while before he found his next challenge. He entered a large forest with white trees, where the sun could not enter through its branches, yet there were still lit up places. Small fireflies lived in this forest, making sure one could travel through the dark and damp forest.
It was a dangerous venture though, as not every part of the forest was lit up and sometimes the fireflies had a mind of their own, constantly dispersing and leaving you in total darkness. Combined with poisonous plants, dangerous animals and a very high chance of getting lost, this forest was very dangerous.
Nocturne felt he had to enter this forest. A strange chant was sung far away, presumably in the key of Db major, a very rare key which expresses grief and rapture, a suppressed feeling which could be mimicked but not truly felt. As he walked along the paths of the forest which were lit by fireflies, he heard the chant growing louder. What was it all about?
‘A thousand lies have made me colder
And I don’t think I can look at this the same’
The chant gave Nocturne a cold and lonely feeling, like there was no hope left whatsoever for anything. Literally anything. As he walked on, he didn’t pay attention to the fact that the fireflies were starting to move away from his path. Slowly, but steady, he moved further into more unlit paths, until he finally was in total darkness. He whipped out his lute and started playing, hoping that this was yet another test to pass. But as he played on, nothing happened. The lyrics he sang had no effect whatsoever on the forest:
“I just can’t look its killing me
And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies”
Nocturne played on and on and on, changing his rhythm, changing his pace, raising his volume, lowering it. He tried one more song:
“There’s an old voice in my head that’s holding me back
Well tell her that I miss our little talks
Soon it will be over and buried with our past
We used to play outside when we were young
And full of life and full of love”
Once again nothing happened. Nocturne choked. He didn’t know where he was. He felt his fingers grow cold, yet he tried to keep playing his lute. SNAP. That was not a good sound. One of his strings on his beloved lute just broke. Was this the end of his journey? His whole body grew cold. He spotted red eyes in the darkness, looking at him. Were those eyes real? What was happening? SNAP. Another string broke. SNAP. Another one. Finally he was left without any strings left on his lute. He didn’t know what to do. He was always under the impression that no matter how hard the struggle, he would figure out what to do.
He succumbed to the floor and dropped down his purple embroidered lute. This was it. The end of Nocturne’s journey.
He failed. For 45 days he just sat there, cold in the forest. Wondering what went wrong, how he could not figure out to play the right tune anymore on his lute. How could his lute fail him? Then it hit him. He was too focused on his beloved lute. He believed the harmonious key he was looking for could only be found by playing his own lute which he knew so well. But what if he tried a new lute? What if he learned to play different strings with different patterns? He surely knew how to play a lute by now. As his thoughts became more clear, the darkness around him started to turn. The fireflies were returning to his path and eventually light was everywhere. To his surprise, there was no forest around him anymore.
Instead, something in the distance could be seen: a whole park full of people carrying different lutes. Nocturne smiled and walked towards the park:
“I think it’s time to truly find out what the meaning of this journey is.”
As he walked towards the park, Fatum appeared behind him and smiled as well:
“It seems this boy finally starts to realize what this journey is all about. He’s starting to live.”
