With many of us switching our heating this week, Laura James’ interior expert, Chloe Barrow, is urging homeowners and renters with radiator covers to be aware of potential safety hazards associated and loss of heat with these popular home accessories. While radiator covers can enhance a room’s aesthetic appeal, they can also pose risks if not used and maintained correctly when the heating is on.
“It goes without saying that radiator covers are a gorgeous addition to any home”, Chloe says “however they need to be properly taken care of to avoid issues.”
Barrow shares three key things to keep in mind if you have radiator covers:
1. Don’t Block The Airflow.
“Radiator covers can significantly restrict airflow, preventing your radiator from heating your room efficiently if used incorrectly. This can lead to higher energy bills and potentially create cold spots in your home, which no one wants during the chilly autumn and winter months. In extreme cases, blocked airflow can even damage the radiator itself, which will cost you a big fee to get fixed. To avoid these issues, you need to ensure that there is adequate space around the radiator for air to circulate freely. Consider leaving a gap of at least 2 inches between the radiator and the cover, especially if you have a large or powerful radiator.”
2. Avoid Putting Flammable Objects on Radiator Covers.
“We’ve all been there, when you need something drying quickly so we pop it on a radiator. However, when we utilise a radiator cover, we’re already restricting airflow somewhat. When we add clothing or other flammable objects, we do this more so and risk overheating. We know that overheating radiators can easily ignite nearby flammable materials, such as curtains and even furniture, so it’s crucial to keep these off the cover when you have the heating on. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and make sure to regularly inspect your radiator cover for any signs of damage or wear to help prevent this.”
3. Keep a Regular Cleaning Routine.
“If not looked after properly, radiator covers can trap dust, dirt, and other debris, which can become a breeding ground for allergens and bacteria, something no one wants in their home. Regular cleaning is truly essential to maintain good indoor air quality and prevent any health problems. It’s even more crucial if anyone in your home suffers with breathing difficulties, such as asthma. Use a soft cloth or hoover with a brush attachment to gently clean the radiator cover and the surrounding area. Additionally, consider using a damp cloth to remove any stubborn dirt or grime. This should be done at least once a week.”
