Sam Bettens, the multi-platinum voice behind the legendary alternative rock band K’s Choice, and one of the most visible transgender musicians to emerge from the ’90s rock scene, is revisiting one of the most defining songs of the ’90s with a brand new reimagined version of “Not An Addict,” (Sam’s Version) which is out now. The song is available on all digital platforms.
Originally released in 1995, “Not An Addict” became an international breakthrough hit for K’s Choice, helping define the alternative rock era and continuing to resonate with audiences around the world decades later. Now, nearly 30 years after its original release, Bettens returns to the song from an entirely different perspective, not only as an artist, but as a man who has experienced profound personal transformation since the song was first written.
More intimate and raw, this new version reflects Bettens’ evolution as a songwriter, storyteller, and transgender artist, bringing new emotional depth and lived experience to the iconic track. “Not An Addict’ has followed me through every version of my life. This version is much more minimal and vulnerable,” Bettens continues. “There’s something powerful about returning to a song people have connected with for so many years and singing it today with a different voice, different experiences, and a much deeper understanding of myself.”
The release follows Bettens’ latest solo album, Coming Home, produced in Nashville by four-time Academy of Country Music Guitar Player of the Year Tom Bukovac, released in September 2025, a deeply personal Americana/country-inspired record that marked a bold new creative chapter. Rooted in raw songwriting and old-school authenticity, the album drew inspiration from Bettens’ years living in East Tennessee, where he spent over a decade immersed in American roots culture and even worked as a professional firefighter while continuing to record and tour with K’s Choice.
Throughout the summer, Bettens will also embark on a series of performances across Europe, bringing both his classic catalog and newer Americana material to audiences overseas.
