Swimming

“Seventy-five percent of our planet is water-can you swim?” Author Unknown

Swimming, my favourite hobby/exercise, I love to swim and yay, it’s good for me too. As a person who suffers with joint pain, I especially love swimming as my whole body is supported in the water. By doing breast stroke I exercise all muscles, without putting stress on my joints. 😀 Swimming also helps me to shape up and slim down. No other workout supports your body whilst burning calories, boosts your metabolism and firms up your muscles. Swimming always makes me feel like I’m on holidays which is always a bonus 🙂

“If you want to learn to swim jump into the water. On dry land no frame of mind is ever going to help you” Bruce Lee

Don’t worry if you can’t swim, take advantage of pool aerobics where you exercise in the water. Again because you’re working against the water, the resistance causes a better workout for your muscles yet still controlled.

“The water is your friend. You don’t have to fight with water, just share the same spirit as water and it will help you move” Aleksander Popov

Why water works:
  • An easy swim burns 500 calories/hour
  • A vigorous swim burns nearly 700 calories/hour
  • Because water supports your body, if you wish, you can workout daily. Something you can’t do with any other sport due to increased risk of injury.
  • Research at an American college of sport showed that habitual swimmers are biologically up to 20 years younger than their actual age. They revealed that a swimmers blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cardiovascular performance, central nervous system and cognitive functioning are all comparable to someone far younger.

“We swim because we are too sexy for a sport that requires clothes” Author Unknown

So why don’t you check your local leisure centre/gym/public pool and enjoy a ‘splish splash splosh’ in the water, smugly knowing whilst you’re having fun in the water, you’re giving yourself a great workout too.

  1. Having recently had knee surgery I’ve had a lot of physio and my favourite part was the hydrotherapy part and I enjoyed this part before with previous physios. But this time I’m going to keep up the swimming lark, just sorted out a yearly subscription at our local pool for the family. Now we will all benefit 🙂
