Born Offside #11 – Anus Clenching Season

So we canter merrily along towards the end of the season with everything still to play for, as the cliche goes. The Premier League is still (just about) undecided, the FA Cup is down to the last four and we still don’t know who is going to be relegated, although very soon the media will start telling us about the £60m threat of relegation. This figure rises every year, last year it was £50m, year before £40m and so on. Then they will christen the play off game to decide who is promoted to the Premier League “The £70m match” and so the value continues to rise. But what do we think will happen, lets see;

The Premier League will be contested between United and Arsenal, or possibly Chelsea if the other two teams contract a squad wide case of the Ebola Virus. The only question is what Arsenal can do with their game in hand? Have they got the mental substance to keep fighting or will they do what they have managed over the last few seasons and perform a Devon Loch? Should Arsenal beat the scousers this weekend and then overcome Spurs there will be a very real title fight but anything less that maximum points and they will enter default mode “we are building a team for the future, I love the youth team players (too much) blah blah blah”. There is an outside chance that Chelsea could still impact the title race but only if they can get Torres scoring again (not just with Ashley Cole) and they will have to beat United at Old Trafford if they are to have any chance.

As Far as the “top four” goes it looks like a fight between Spurs and City, unless Kenny can continue the revolution and gatecrash the party. However this could have wider reaching implications. For the last season and a half the scousers have been playing European football on a Thursday, which is giro day. A switch to Champions League may see the house burglaries return as the fans try to steal enough saleable items to pay for their ciggies and leccy.

The FA Cup is down to the last four and those City fans are dreaming of the twin towers. Only because they have no idea what the new Wembley looks like as they haven’t troubled the engravers for 35 years. If they are to get their name on the cup they have to first overcome their local rivals (Not Stockport) and Scarf Mancini will need to move away from his trusted 9-0-1 formation, especially as the 1 is injured. Despite having £150m+ of strikers at his disposal they have so far managed very little in the way of goal threat, although Mad Mario has offered  a great deal in the way of actual threat to anyone that crosses his path. The poor soul just needs someone to treat him to a dart board.

Relegation could still be 3 from any 7 but its likely to be the three w’s. Wigan are too inconsistent and apart from that they only have 37 fans and a chairman so vain he named the stadium after himself. Shame he wasn’t called Ken Yeo then we could have had the KY stadium, would have provided easier access. west Ham has become a farcical club, foul abuse spewing fans, a team with no heart and Baron Greenback as manager. Poor old Wolves will probably go down despite taking points off all the top teams, but that’s no use if you cant beat the shit ones. Other teams could still enter the battle, Villa could end up being the most expensively assembled squad to depart from the Premier league, but then what can you expect when you make the foolish mistake of hiring Houllier and his magic 8 ball. That must be how he makes his decisions, they lack any other rationale. “Magic 8 ball, will Heskey get 20 league goals?”

Only time will tell on all of these fronts, how do you see the rest of the season shaping up? Best answer wins a kit kat (chunky)
