Just what is this Twitter that has taken over the social networking scene, and at 5 years old, how is it that as the early-adopters move on to newer networking sites, there are still people joining twitter?
Twitter was launched on July 15th 2006. It’s a website, owned and operated by twitter Inc. It offers a social networking and micro blogging service enabling it’s users to send and receive messages called tweets. The tweets are 140 characters long (you get used to this)
The website is based in San Francisco, has had 200 million users, generating 350 million tweets a day!!
Twitter has been called the SMS of the Internet. It’s a way of communicating with other people who have the same interests as yourself. Eg #manutd 😀 ,you can search for local people and chat generally or you can follow famous people who tweet.
One of the phenomena’s of twitter is how strangers become friends. I’ve been on twitter since March 2008 and I’m still in contact with some of my original twitter friends. Over the past 3 years the chat has developed into sharing and caring. I didn’t expect this, but am so glad it’s happened. These people are part of my life and their daily goings on are important to me 🙂
I’ve been through the development of relationships, the announcements of pregnancy and births, through sickness and health, through holidays, the ups and downs of life. It’s amazing how much people share. It’s led to Tweet-ups, where tweeters meet in real life, I’ve met some local people who have turned out to be even better in real life. :D. I have had some more awkward tweetups but generally it’s been a fabulous experience. I’ve read about my tweeter-friends tweet ups, some who have travelled across the world to meet up 😀 There is always a risk. So take into consideration who you are meeting, where and why…..
There are others who use it to promote their business; some who use it to promote their blogs; those who are there to follow and not chat; those who are there to update and comment but not to have a tweet conversation; those who are there to network, the list goes on. Whether you use it to find friends, to chat, or to promote Twitter is there for you 😀
