Hey everyone!
Wow, the weather is so fan-bloody-tastic this weekend isn’t it? Well it is as far as I can see from my living room window…yes that’s right I’m sat inside on this glorious day being a bit of a geek really. I just got a brand spanking new iPhone and I’m so addicted to it, it really is the best thing I’ve ever owned! So whilst sat lazily on my sofa in my oversized t-shirt with the fan on full blast playing ‘Where’s Wally?’, it got me thinking about how things have changed as time has gone by. Fashion, Music. Technology and a whole lot of other stuff! Here are a few random things that have changed…
Mobile Phones: I was 14 years old when I got my first mobile phone, a Nokia 5110. Who remembers these? These phones were all the rage in the 90’s everybody had them. I used to love sitting at the back of the class playing the very popular game Snakes during a boring lesson! How fun was it to customise your handset the way you wanted it with changeable covers, coloured keypads and flashing aerials?! To look back on the 5110 now it has got to be the most simplest phone to use and the battery life was amazing!
Fashion: I love looking back at old photos of me and friends but how many of you cringe at your hair or what you were wearing? Well I’ve stopped cringing now cos if you think about it, that look was so ‘in’ back then and everybody was doing it. Also, old is becoming new with fashion these days just take a look inside your wardrobe. Bug-eyed sunglasses, 60’s inspired. Flared trousers, 70’s inspired. Black Gothic corset, Medieval inspired. Wow, I could go on and on but you get the idea.
Music: Music is one of my passions but I’m really not a fan of what it has become today! It’s all computerised beats, auto-tuned voices and dumb lyrics. Don’t get me wrong though I do not completely hate today’s music but some of it is just…erm…whack! Whatever happened to real instruments and natural talent? Even those singing programmes like the X-Factor have been reported to have used auto-tune on the audition shows! So uncool! I love music from all era’s and it’s nice to see some bands and artists are trying to bring it back!
The English Language. English was one of my favourites subjects to study and I found it fascinating how the language has changed over time. I was reading an old Medieval cookbook and I couldn’t understand one bit to be honest and the recipes didn’t sound too appealing either. I really loved reading about Shakespearean times and how they used to speak. I wonder how much more the language can change in the future? To go from ‘How art thou?’ to ‘Wah gwarn?’ is a massive change. I think I’ll just stick to ‘Alright mate?’.
What random things can you think of that have changed a lot? Bet you can think of a few. I may love a classic mobile phone but after having the iPhone for a couple of days I don’t think I could ever go back, it’s amazing! I wonder what phones will be like in another 10 years!
So guys, next time you sit down to watch a DVD on your giant HD flatscreen, take a moment to remember your 14 inch black and white TV and VCR, it misses you! Bring back some of that old wacky fashion and big hair and be comfortable in what you wear and try listening to some music from a different time every now and then, you never know you might love it! Mix up the good things of the old and the new!

Well Jen….as a product of and a lover of the sixties sounds as well as the classical music, I have to agree whole heartedly with your Music thoughts! And staying on that topic…Is the reason why standards have dropped so dramatically because everyone is being encouraged to think that they have either a song or a composition in them?…..whereas in fact they don’t!!! The problem with suppressing that sort of (dodgy) encouragement though, is that we would go back to a situation where nobody had the confidence to try to be creative because they thought that they couldn’t sing, play or whatever….So I guess what I’m saying is that by its nature music should indeed be encouraged and be spontaneous and that anyone should feel they can participate. The upside of that is that just sometimes – you get to hear some incredible previously undiscovered talent. The downside of course is that people inspired by the encouragement we perhaps (reluctantly!) agree everyone should get… you will also get to hear more than a fair trough load of….er….whack as you describe it!…
And if that’s not waffle I’m not sure what is!!..but keep it up Jen! It’s fun! You did a great job with the website look by the way!
