Beauty expert shares how to prep your skin for the heatwave

For skin, that short window of calm is valuable. It’s the difference between scrambling to cope once the heat hits, and being ready for it.

LOOKFANTASTIC beauty expert Jess Clarke says the next few days are the ideal time to make a few small changes, rather than waiting until skin is already overheated, dehydrated and irritated.

“After the heat we’ve just had, it’s tempting to relax the routine while things feel cooler,” says Jess Clarke. “But this is exactly the window to use. A few simple changes now mean you’re not playing catch-up once the next hot spell arrives, and skin copes far better with heat it’s already adjusted to than heat that catches it off guard.”

Here’s how to prep your skin for the heatwave:

1. Get your skincare in the fridge now

Don’t wait until the next amber warning to think about this one. Pop eye patches, face mists or an ice roller in the fridge today so they’re ready to go the moment temperatures climb again. The cold therapy helps reduce puffiness and gives an instant cooling hit on hot mornings.

2. Start the switch to water-based formulas

Use this cooler window to ease out heavier creams and ease in lightweight, water-based alternatives, such as a botanical water or hydrating mist. Making the swap gradually now means skin isn’t adjusting to a new routine at the same time as adjusting to extreme heat.

3. Build a “heat kit” for on the move

A hyaluronic or ceramide-infused facial mist for the bag, a lightweight SPF for top-ups, and a cooling spray for the desk. Put this together now, while there’s time to actually find the right products, rather than during the next warning when everyone else has the same idea.

4. Reset SPF habits before the pressure’s back on

Even on the cooler, cloudier days this week, UV exposure doesn’t drop away entirely. Use this period to rebuild the habit of regular reapplication so it’s second nature once the heat, and the urgency, returns.

5. Ease off anything harsh while skin recovers

After a spell of extreme heat, skin is often more reactive than usual, even once temperatures have dropped. Use this calmer week to let skin recover with barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides and allantoin, rather than reaching for strong exfoliants, so it’s in good shape, not still recovering, when the next hot spell lands.

Think of this week as prep time, not downtime; the small changes you make now are what make the next hot spell genuinely manageable, rather than something you’re just enduring.
