Based on the graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Mally, Scott Pilgrim Vs the World is a fast-paced, quirky, geeky comedy directed by Edgar Wright and set in the magical world of Toronto, Canada.
Without spoiling too much, the story is about Scott Pilgrim (played by Michael Cera) , who is a bass player in the band Sex Bob-Omb and an avid gamer. The story starts with Scott dating a high-schooler, Knives Chau (Ellen Wong), but then Scott
meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the new girl in town and everything starts to change. Scott has a history of messy relationships, but still manages to fall for Ramona while with Knives.
Of course, getting what you want is never easy, and to get Ramona to himself, Scott must first defeat her seven evil ex’s.
I loved the way fights were shown in this movie- especially the use of things like hit combos etc. The fighting is shown more as if it were a video game than a real-life fight, and this was a good touch I thought. Some parts were shown in 8-bit animation and this added to the arcade gaming feel of the movie.
The movie made me feel nostalgic, as parts from famous games were used, such as bob-ombs in the band name, Zelda’s Lullaby being played in a scene, and of course the fighting scenes.
One of my favourite parts of this movie was actually the Universal company opening before the film begins. It is played in 8-bit sound with 8-bit animation, and it blew my mind. Played loud through those cinema speakers, I knew as soon as it started that this movie was going to be awesome.
A great soundtrack, completely quotable script and stunning visual effects, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a must-see for any gamer or geek who wants a good night in with a great film. Definitely not a film that everyone will enjoy, but certainly one that I adored.
The first time I watched this film I felt like I had been subject to water torture. For some unknown reason, I gave it another go and I’m delighted I did because it really is a cracking adaption.
I think it helped that I did a bit of research on Scott Pilgrim before I rewatched it which explained a lot of the strangeness. Edgar Wright is a fantastic director and I urge anyone who hasn’t seen it to give it a go.
Oh and if you don’t like the film, there is always the super-hot Mary Elizabeth Winstead to keep you entertained.
