Stop Whining About Facebook’s Changes

There’s been a lot of talk about Facebook lately. Seems everyone has an opinion on what Zuckerberg and Co. have decided to do in regards to the future of the world’s largest social network.

Right off the bat, the general consensus to what was revealed at the f8 Developer’s Conference was negative. A lot of it, at least from what I saw in my News Feed was hateful. Even derogative.

And to be honest, that really annoys me.

Sure, I’ll be the first to say that I don’t like change. When the things that we use every day and the most consistently are revamped, discarded or replaced, whether it be our televisions or even toothpaste, there’s always an adjustment period. As materialistic beings, we cling to what we own, and more often than not, reject disturbances. But not always. Case in point: remember when Facebook first, second, and for the hundreth hundreth time changed dramatically? Yeah me either, but I do remember a time when there was no News Feed, no chat, no applications, not even status updates. These memories are cloudy, but I know they existed, and you probably do too.

So what I’m getting to is that the pattern of Facebook users, who cry and moan (not literally, I hope) over new additions to the site, who later can’t live without these changes, need to stop whining when future changes are made. Seriously.

Nay sayers argue that Facebook is becoming too “glittery,” like MySpace did, which led to its downfall. Okay– fair argument.

All I have to say, though, is that thankfully Facebook isn’t owned by a media corporate like Fox, which is really why MySpace fell apart. It’s still Zuckerberg’s baby, and for that reason alone, I promise you the site is in much better hands than MySpace was when Fox bought it all those years ago. And come on, the site had an Oscar winning movie made about it– I really don’t think they’re going to screw up that easily.

Sure, that doesn’t mean that Zuck isn’t his own corporate conglomerate, but that’s another story I’d rather not get into. All I want to say is that you should give the new Facebook a chance. I think you’ll grow to appreciate the new ticker found above the chat. It’s a little ridiculous, yes, but I think it’ll get rid of a lot of the clutter we don’t necessarily want to see about our friends on our News Feeds. Organization, I like it.

Even if it does mean that we can now “Facebook while we Facebook.”

I’ll save another post for the other new features on Facebook, such as the Timeline and new buttons, but that’s all for now.
