You may have noticed recently that the technology giants Apple released the latest installment in their iPhone range. There had been much anticipation of this latest phone as people waited to see how Apple could top their iPhone 4 with what wqas expected to be the iPhone 5. Indeed it became interesting to try to find out who was more excited anout this potential release; Those who have a genuine interest in technology or those, like me, who believed that the release of the iPhone 5 would herald the beginning of mobile phone companies selling the iPhone 4 free of charge.
As it transpired everybody would be disappointed as, instead of the expected iPhone 5, Apple released an updated iPhone 4. Or, as I call it, the iPhone 4 and a bit.
However, was this disappointment justified? What were we really expecting from this new phone? After all is the iPhone (and as a point of fact all smart phones) just a telephone with lots of added swanky bits? Well actually it isn’t. The iPhone and all other smart phones are porn on tap.
What? I hear you cry incredulously. Surely I am not being serious. All technology bods are currently spluttering their cornflakes across the room putting their family in danger as the spray of milk lands dangerously close to their laptops and iPads. Well, I am sorry to have to burst your 21st century bubble but I have yet to hear of a convincing reason to own a smartphone other than to have the possibility of accessing great-big-giant-boobies.com forward slash wow whilst on the bus to work.
Of course all the many technology fans out there are saying, “No, no, no. You’re wrong. It’s all about multi-media interfacing and e-mails and apps. What about the apps? You forgot about the apps!”
You’re wrong. Sorry. If I wanted to play games on a tiny screen with 8 bit graphics I would have kept my Gameboy Colour from back in the day.
You see in this day and age everything is hyped as a must have or a must see. “Oh you have this.” “Oh you must have that.” “What? You mean you haven’t got one? But this is the best one ever.” We are always told what we must have or do. We must have e-mails on tap. Why on earth would I need to access my e-mails when I am on the bus to work on a wet Tuesday morning? It is almost as if we are not trusted enough to make our own decisions. Everything from things such as smartphones all the way up to the top with our governments. “We are all in this together,” they say “we all must tighten our belts because for years and years we allowed the banks to run amok and we completely mis-spent your money and anyone who disagrees with us is a danger to our country.” Nobody seems to be saying to the government. “Er, hang on, we didn’t cause any of this so please explain why we are being made to pay for it.” We are being told what to think without stopping to to think for ourselves and say hang on, this is my life and this is our world can we all not just have fun and play in it?
Wow! Where did all that come from? Sorry folks. This just started as a wee article about smartphones and ended up as a rant against the mighty. I never thought I had it in me. I suppose that’s what sitting on a Saturday morning full of a cold can do to one, it can put you in an odd sort of a mood. Anyhow, I’m off to get a new smartphone. Sorry but I’ve talked myself into one…
