MOVEMBER it’s all about the tache

MOVEMBER.  Men’s health-your health, your responsibility

Just what is the fuss about……

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men’s health.

I, like many woman, have a man in my life who seems adverse to discussing His health let alone seeing the family GP! No matter what’s going on, he fobs it off, has a ready self made diagnosis, he hasn’t the time or maybe he’s just scared of what they might find. Sound familiar?

Fact: Only  26% of men go to their GPs for regular checkups

Why?
Probably the same reasons as my husband… unless his foot is hanging off, he’ll just not go!! And this is with his mom and me berating him.

So how do we change my husbands attitude and most men’s view in regard to their health?

Movember was created to illuminated men’s health issues in a fun way and encourage men to talk about and deal sensibly with their health like their female counterparts.

Fact:  avg life expectancy for men is 4 years less than females
(men78 women82)

Please, using an Ulster phrase which is oddly apt “catch a grip” and check yourselves out, we woman miss you when you aren’t about. Be proactive with your health

Fact: one in nine men are diagnosed with prostate cancer

Fact: testicular cancer affects younger men (20-50yrs)

Using the moustache as a catalyst, Movember wants to bring about change and give men the opportunity and confidence to talk about their health more openly

Their primary campaign objective

-to raise awareness of men’s health issues specifically cancers affecting men
-to ensure men realise that cancers are curable if caught in the early stages; including prostate and testicular cancer

Recommendations

-have an annual checkup (novembers a good month)
-don’t smoke
-be physically active
-enjoy a healthy heart
-stay at a healthy weight
-manage your stress
-drink alcohol in moderation
-know your family history
