Here in Virginia it seems like we rarely get four full seasons anymore. It’s either summer or winter. This pisses me off because spring and fall are my favorite seasons. We just had snow at the end of October and that never happens. Then three days later, it’s 70 degrees out. It got me thinking about switching out my wardrobe to get ready for colder weather. It also got me thinking about what I’d like to have in my rotating wardrobe come fall/winter time. Here are five must-haves for men (and women).
1. A nice peacoat.
Now don’t let your 2001 self convince you that peacoats aren’t hip anymore. 2001 you is just bitter that you never hang out anymore. In reality, peacoats continue to evolve and stay relevant. Here is a picture of one that I’d love to have. This is a Fox Brothers & Co. Wool ($200-$500), but you can find cheaper ones at Old Navy and H&M. In fact, I have one from each store.
2. A nice pair of boots.
Now, depending on the type of weather you get during fall and winter, you’ll want to adjust your boot shopping adventures. It rains and snows here in Virginia, but it doesn’t usually snow like it does in Canada or Minnesota or the North Pole. These two boots are favorites styles of mine. They are also practical for outdoor weather. Now, some boots can be expensive, so shop around. I just got a pair of Steve Madden boots like the 2nd picture at Macy’s for $50. Expect to spend anywhere between $100 and $200 for a good pair that will last.
Mr. Rogers made them famous, but you can make them hip. I like thick sweater cardigans because I like the ability to put the collar up and bundle up. They are thick, warm, and stylish. Just like this one.
4. A nice pair of slippers.
It’s not always about what other people get to see. There are going to be days where no one in the world sees you, but you still want to be comfortable and not look like you’re homeless. A nice pair of hard-bottomed slippers are more than just functional. These are from J.Crew and would run about $40, but you can find some cheaper ones (Merona at Target for $25).
5. A nice beanie.
Screw hipsters, they won’t ruin this for everyone. They haven’t even figured out how or when to wear them. Hanging off the back of their heads in the middle of summer only pisses the beanies off. Let’s do this right – covering your ears, in the winter. You can find a good one anywhere you look. A beanie that is, not a hipster.
