Love: The deadliest of drugs

It’s funny how something you hold so dear can also be the thing that hurts you the most. You spend your life searching for that one thing that completes you, then, when you have found it, it can hurt you like nothing ever has before. It’s because of the most deadly drug in the world, the legal high, the devastating low, and that one thing is love.

Love could be our greatest plus and our most dangerous negative. It can make us stronger than an iron girder one minute, then as weak as tissue paper the next. It’s more addictive than cigarettes or alcohol, yet harder to kick than heroin. For some, if they can’t have love then it makes them give up all hope, even give up the most vital of actions like eating or breathing. Yet we still yearn for that feeling, that heart warming emotion, that makes you feel like a teenager again. We are all addicts on this celestial journey, craving our next fix of love.

But why do we do it to ourselves? What makes us become so totally dependant on another person? Even if that person causes you devastating pain; the need, the hope, the longing for that initial feeling makes us persevere with what’s potentially a lost cause. Why do we lack that fundamental ability to ‘turn off’ unwanted emotions? To stop ourselves from the mental and physical pain caused by heartbreak? It’s like some Godly joke on humanity, giving us this greatest gift of love, but coupling it with the anguish of loss or heartbreak.

Well the answer to the question is easy. Love, at its purist and most natural point, is worth anything that comes after it. If there is a glimmer of hope that feeling can be rekindled, it’s worth the pain, worth the devastation and worth holding on for. That one feeling of love can be enough to fill people’s hearts for a lifetime. Even the most fleeting moments of love can stay with you for the rest of your days. And that is the power that love holds over us, and will continue to hold over us, until we cease to be humans and evolve into something else. Because, at the end of the day, as the song goes, love is all you need.
