The Artist – My Review

Have you ever gone to see something that takes your breath away? So mesmerising that you want to go back in and watch it again. Well for me, The Artist is one of those cinematic gems that cannot be missed.

I knew nothing about it, so to be taken to the QFT surrounded by staunch movie watchers and view a black and white silent movie in 4:3…… Well, that’s worth blogging about.

The Artist is a story about a glass being set on a table…….
(when you watch the movie you will know exactly what I mean by that statement)

A romance set in Holywood Land from 1927-1932, where silent movies are coming to the end of their Era and ‘talkies’ are set to raise new bright stars putting the declining “artistes” in the shade…..

This is the story of a declining actor who’s silent movies brought him fame and accolade, who has to make way for the effervescent young female actress who’s ability to walk the walk and more importantly talk the talk brings her the fame he has now lost, yet craves for. This is a story of love, the love of performing, the love of attention, the love of fame. It is also a tale of romance 🙂

What was so magical, was the flow of the movie and that the silence was unnoticeable. Such was the acting as the movie unfolded, instant bonds were made with the onscreen characters.

To sit in a silent cinema, which every so often had an impromptu laugh, sigh or sharp intake of breath by all of the audience at exactly the same time, THAT was an experience in itself. To glance around and see wide-eyed wonderment and pleasure as the film unfolded was so special. Exactly what the director wanted and boy was it deserved. So much so Jean Dujardin won the best actor award in the 2011 Cannes film festival (where it was premiered) and the movie’s up for 6 golden globe nominations.

I could go on and on, but I’ve already told you too much. If you want to see a piece of cinematic genius, find out where it’s being screened and catch it before it disappears. I highly recommend it 🙂
