I’m struggling to write here. Maybe I’m too negative.
But there’s two things that have taken the headlines around the tech sphere in the past 24 hours and that’s Yahoo’s new CEO and Microsoft’s new Office Suites. And what’s getting to me is I’m not really interested in either.
Yes, the appointment of Marissa Mayer is great for feminism, and for business, and obviously for Yahoo. But I’m so over Yahoo, I couldn’t care less. What with its multiple attempts with different CEOs over the past few years, each who have not been able to rebuild Yahoo into what it once was, I’m just skeptical. I respect Mayer, her history with Google and her talent, but I’m just not convinced at this point that Yahoo can be saved by the time 2013 rolls around. Though I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong about that. Go Mayer, go!
As for Microsoft Suites, I feel the exact same way. Excel, word, and even Skype now are all a part of Microsoft’s gem known as Suites. It gets our business done in the office during the week, and is our sanctuary when we’re working on separate, creative things in our free time. Especially Word.
But I just don’t get it. Maybe, if something comes along with it when Microsoft 8 is released that really makes the Suites platforms shine, I’ll feel differently. But there’s too much at stake, I think at least, for Microsoft to be risking as it anticipates the release of 8 to the public. Maybe, again, however, I’m too skeptical. Who knows.
