My Five Favourite Things to Eat

my favourite 5

This is really just food lust to be honest, because I’m sitting here and I’m really hungry. These are my five favourite things to eat:-

1. A Roast Dinner

Well, I’m English, so this just has to be true. I love a roast-particularly when its pork. I like the pork well done so the meat is tender enough to cut with a spoon, but the crackling is crisp and crunchy. I like my potatoes tiny and really well roasted, a lovely hard crispy skin with a soft fluffy inside (cover potatoes in boiling water for 1 minute before roasting.) I like roasted carrots and roasted red onion, roasted parsnips, steamed broccoli and steamed carrots. It’s just great. Gravy is a necessity, always. I like to pile my plate so high you can barely see me behind it and barrel my way through. At a certain festive time of year I roast essentially the entire contents of my fridge and live off it for a week. Hooray!

2. A Banana

I love bananas. I like the way they taste, I like the texture, I like the versatility (bananas on toast, on cereal, blended in a smoothie etc.) I also just plain like the word “banana”. However, anything banana flavoured (milkshakes, sweets) is vile and should be banned.

3. Chips

They don’t have stones, they don’t have any pips, they don’t have any bones, that’s why I like chips. I forget who wrote that little poem. However, I love chips. I just do. I will have them with anything and at any time. I love a big portion of chips by the seaside. Standing facing the roaring sea while your face is stinging from the wind and your lips are burning from vinegar and salt but you keep stuffing the soft gooey goodness down your face. Sneaking chips off your Dad’s plate when you’re little and he’s having a Saturday night takeaway. Drunkenly wolfing down a big box of chips and mayonnaise after far too many tequilas. I think my memoir would mostly just be me eating chips.

4. Angel Cake

I love angel cake and whenever I’m sad, someone usually brings angel cake. It is the queen of cakes. It’s pink, it’s soft, it’s sweet and it’s heavenly. The icing melts in your mouth, particularly when you eat a slice straight after taking a sip of tea. I don’t buy it for myself as I would never eat another thing if I did, but I appreciate the gift of it.  If you ever offend me, do not panic, merely come over with angel cake and all will be forgiven.

5. Spaghetti Bolognese

My Mum used to make this with relative frequency when I was small and I loved it then and I love it now. It’s just fun to eat. The sauce should be really rich and thick so it glitters, and you should hoover up each long strand of spaghetti in a big splatty squiddle. I actually always put on an old shirt before I eat this because I tend to fling it around a bit, usually getting a blob in my hair. I’m not bothered. It’s a fun food! Also it is exceptionally good with a big slice of very thick, very buttery white bread upon which you should pile spaghetti and sauce, fold in half, and eat like the world’s best sandwich.
