After a very long time I recently found myself going on a first date, and let me tell you I’ve never been so nervous about anything in my whole life.
Because there were some scheduling conflicts (all my work stuff) I had a good week to plan my outfit for said first date.
I knew it was going to be a casual date; get coffee, go for a walk maybe get some lunch and just see how things go, but I was still so so nervous and despite having a massive wardrobe filled with clothes and shoes and all kinds of accessories, I still had nothing to wear.
When discussing nerves and fashion choices with the guy who would be taking me out his reply was “just wear one of your hoodies and Converse, you look beautiful no matter what you wear…” Jeez men are useless sometimes aren’t they?!
So as tempting as it was to just throw on my hoody, I did want to make an effort, seriously he’s too cute not to make an effort for. (Shut up Samantha you’re such a sap!)
So as freaked out as I was I actually learned a few things and thought I would pass on my wisdom to you.
Dress for the Occasion: So when you have your first date planned ie. where you’re going, the next step is to figure out what to wear. It should be obvious that you don’t wear a sequined bodycon dress out to the cinema.
My advice is just think realistically as to what you’d wear if you were going there with friends or by yourself. So if you were to say jeans and a top, go pick out your most favourite pair of jeans that make you feel fabulous and your most flattering top and just wear them.
Low Heels or No Heels: Seriously, I’m 20 something-ish (ahem) and so completely over high heels, what really is the point especially if you can’t walk in them, yeah they may look good but you’ll look ridiculous wobbling around the place. Plus you know your feet will be killing you in an hour.
If you really insist on heels, go for something low with a sturdy heel or a simple kitten heel. Oh and FYI I actually wore my favourite pair of Converse on my first date, he said they were awesome. (I said stop it Samantha!)
Nothing to Revealing: Dunno if anyone is aware of it, but I have some pretty big, ummmm….assets, and was very much noticing them more than usual in every top I tried on. I didn’t really wanna give away the farm on a first date but man oh man I just couldn’t hide them. So after I picked out a black v-neck top to wear I made a wise decision to wear a simple white vest underneath it. The point I’m trying to make is, ya gotta be mysterious, and respectful of yourself, (good) guys dig that crap.
Comfort Comes First: You don’t want to be pulling at, stretching or fixing your clothes all night long, where something that you feel comfortable in, if you’re not worried about how you look you’re personality will shine through more. Also go for something you’ve worn before that’s been tried and tested, you don’t want any fashion mishaps on your first date.
Keep Accessories Simple: One piece of jewellery is ideal; like a bracelet/watch or a necklace but not both. Wear simple stud earrings too, appear classy not trashy. Too much and you’ll seem high maintenance, plus you don’t want to be messing with your jewellery all night.
Perfume: I never leave the house without perfume, it gives me that extra boost of confidence. My only advice with this is, instead of it being the last thing you put on on your way out the door, let it be the first thing you put on before you get dressed. It’ll give it time to work with your natural scent and you won’t choke your date when he leans in to kiss you. (Tee hee!)
Make Up: You want to look like you at your very best, so avoid the MAC counters before your date. Accentuate your best features; a subtle smokey eye is quite sexy, go for a quick sweep of bronzer to give you a nice glow and best advice ever, avoid dark heavy lip stick or a bright sticky lip gloss. A tinted lip balm is natural looking but still pretty and it means your date won’t be wiping away your kisses. Woooo! (Gawd I’m even making myself gag…)
Last piece of advice…Jeans all the way, if he’s gonna wear them why can’t you, especially if your butt looks mighty fine in them. 😉
