Tuesday’s Tech Take: Mozilla’s Segue Into Smartphones

I was happy to read about this yesterday: Mozilla announcing that they’re developing their very own smartphone OS. What does this mean? That just about everyone’s favorite web browser, Firefox, and its incredible company, Mozilla, is taking a step into the OS market, and admittedly, it may actually do well against iOS and Android.

And that’s not even the best part. Mozilla is not looking to add its new OS and cheap(!) phones into an already crowded first word market (at least for now), but instead, will focus on developing a consumer market in poorer countries around the world.

How about that.

I think this move is astounding– it’s a sign of changing tides, of at least one large corporations’s legitimate interest in getting the whole world caught up into this decade’s technology and said coporation’s legitimate interest in doing something risky, but well worth the payoff, if it works. Which, I have no doubts about, will.

Mozilla’s OS is already well on its way, too. LG, Huawei, TCL, and ZTE are already on board for making phones for this OS. Also noteworthy is that Mozilla’s apps will be HTML5 based, which is a big deal if you ask me. This will allow for more average users who know the code, i.e., most people who write web pages (which is far more than the total of iOS and Android developers combined), to help make Mozilla’s OS debut stronger and stick around for the long run.

Nothing quite like making the most universal code on the Internet nowadays become your main source for user engagement, product development, as well as your most hopeful word of mouth marketing initiative.

Smooth, Mozilla. Very much so.
