With just three races down in this year’s F1 season it has already seen three different winners (Raikkonen, Vettel and Alonso) but the headlines have been mostly around team orders. In the Malaysian Grand Prix Sebastian Vettel went against team orders and overtook his team mate Mark Webber, causing more rumours of unrest at Red Bull and that Webber will not stand for it any more.
I’ll admit that I don’t really like Vettel which for the reasons I have in my head is pretty rubbish. He’s arrogant (the No 1 finger annoys me beyond belief) and I generally think he’s a bit rude. There is also the argument that he always gets his own way at Red Bull and I guess my instinct will show sympathy for the underdog, Mark Webber.
Webber is no underdog, he does have the worst luck in the world at times. The Chinese Grand Prix showed that as he was forced to retire after his tyre came off as it had not been put on properly in the pit stop. Conspiracy theorists will tell you that it’s not just bad luck and want Webber out of Red Bull as soon as possible. I do believe that Webber could win a Championship at another team, I cannot see how he won’t always play second fiddle to Vettel.
For me watching The Malaysian Grand Prix when Vettel went up against Webber it was pure racing, fighting for the top position and even though we knew there were orders I bet everyone watching was shouting at the screens (or hiding behind a cushion as they did get pretty close at times) for their ‘favourite’ to take 1st. Vettel was wrong to go against team orders but I can respect someone who has the desire to win at all costs.
Everyone has a fighting spirit in them and mixed with adrenaline it can make you do crazy things. Crazy but winnable things. You can’t be good at sport and not aspire to be a winner, Vettel is a Champion and he will continue to think like that.
I don’t like Vettel and I don’t really want him to win another Championship but I can’t hate on him for being too competitive. This is sport and for me personally I want to see the drivers race each other, no matter if they are on the same team or not. I guess I am just not in favour of team orders. So yes I can respect Vettel for his winning mentality and I hope Red Bull lets them both race fairly this season.
Either way, F1 is back and it’s even more exciting than last year. I didn’t think that could be possible!
