The Funeral was the first single from Band of Horses debut album, released in 2006. The song was released as a radio and bideo single in the UK in 2007 and on limited 7″ vinyl. A live version of the song was on the bands self-titled EP under the name “Billion Day Funeral”. Pitchfork Media named this the 67th greatest song of the 2000’s in 2009.
The music video is completely open to interpretation and could be a lot of things. It seems to tell the story of a man who’s dog has died- although perhaps the dog symbolises depression. It is probably set around the 1970’s and in Chicago, although nothing actually tells us exactly when the video is meant to be set. I think this heartbreaking song deserves such an ambiguous and strange video, and I like it alot.
