Golden Brown was released as a 7″ single in November 1981 in the USA and January 1982 in the UK. It is from the sixth studio album by The Stranglers “La Folie”. The lyrics to the song have been rumoured to be about heroin, but the band remain mysterious on this one, sometimes saying in interviews that it is, sometimes saying that it was actually about a girl or just a “pleasurable time”. They also said in one interview that the song was about marmite.
The song reached number 2 in the UK singles chart, and was judged to have been on the UK’s “Songs that should have been number 1”.
The videos shows the band as explorers in a foreign country, and uses stock footage of Egypt, Uzbekistan and Iran. The video was actually shot in Holland Park in London, which is all together less exotic. I still love this song and it’s soothing lullaby like melody.
