Music Monday: Joy Division – Transmission

joy division

Transmission is a song by post punk band Joy Division and was released on Factory Records in October 1979 as a 7″ vinyl and re-released as a 12″ single with a different sleeve in December 1980. The single charted twice in New Zealand, reaching number 2, and then again at number 24 in July 1984.

NME rated Transmission at number 20 in its list of 50 greatest indie anthems ever, one place below the epic “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. It is also known as the infamous scene in 24 Hour Party People where Ian Curtis suffers an epileptic fit on stage.

It has been covered by many bands, including Low, Bauhau, Innerpartysysem, Hot Chip and The Smashing Pumpkins. The cast of 24 Hour Party People covered the song for Control, the biography of Ian Curtis’ life.

There is very little I can say about this. It’s Joy Division. That’s all you need to know.
