How to Clear Your Mind in the City

Living in a big city like London or Chicago means there’s always plenty to see and do, from the museums to the shopping. But with all the traffic and noise of big city life, it can often be difficult to relax and clear your mind. Even so, you can find quiet within yourself, even without escaping the hubbub of the city’s confines.

Organize your Home

No matter how bustling the city is outside, the inside of your home should be a haven. That’s because clutter itself can be stress inducing, as it reminds you of all that you need to do at home. While cleaning isn’t considered a fun activity by many, you can make it more enjoyable — and even a bit relaxing — by turning up the music and starting with one room or one task, like organizing that stack of books or sweeping the floor. Once the clutter is out of sight, your mind will be just a bit clearer, which will allow you to enjoy life in the big city even more.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Even the most bustling cities prioritize green spaces, and your city is likely no different. If you are new to the area, take a quick walk around your neighborhood and get to know it a little better. Where are the parks? What about the plazas or water features? Every city is different, but most build in free recreational and meeting areas.

In some cities, you may even be lucky enough to be well-connected to more natural areas by public transportation, or at least a quick drive. Look for a local hiking club or sports group to get your physical activity in, or think about joining a running group closer to home. Or, if you prefer to ride, many cities have motorcycle clubs that travel together on weekends with nice weather. Just be sure to keep the number of a good motorcycle accident lawyer on hand!

Still want to get out of the city to clear your mind? Look for weekend getaways in discount sites like Groupon or Travelzoo.

Participate in a Community Garden

While many homes, condos, and apartments don’t have the land or space needed for a garden of your own, there’s been a surge in recent years in the number of community or neighborhood gardens. Gardening is a wonderful way to step away from the hectic life of the city. When you’re digging into the dirt to plant flowers, or even pulling weeds, you’re focused on the task at hand, allowing you to find a sense of peace. Ask your local library if you’re not sure where to look for a community garden, or if you’re in the United States, try checking on the website of the American Community Gardening Association.

Do Yoga, Inside or Outside

Yoga studios abound in nearly every big city, whether you’re looking for a gentle introduction or master class. While the focus on yoga is to find alignment, the focus on breathing techniques also allows participants to clear their minds.

You can also commune with the nature in the city while doing yoga. A variety of instructors lead classes in many outdoor spaces, including parks, beaches, or even zoos. For the adventurous yoga aficionado, stand up paddle boarding classes are also available. It all depends on your city and the natural features present there.

Overall, it may seem that the city never sleeps, but there are always ways to escape the hustle and bustle and take a bit of a breather.
