The Glorious World of UK Summer Flat Racing

Summers in the UK can be short and sweet but that doesn’t stop organisers cramming in an impressive programme of sport. Every year, sports fans are treated to a feast of elite events including Wimbledon, international test cricket, the British Open Golf Championship, the British Grand Prix and a whole host of top quality horse racing festivals including Goodwood, Royal Ascot and the York Ebor Festival.

This article takes a closer look at the UK’s top horse racing events held each summer.

Goodwood

Goodwood held its first official meeting in 1802 and has been a key event on the flat racing calendar ever since. The festival has become known as Glorious Goodwood thanks to its stunning location and often sunny conditions. The event features three Group 1 flat races (Goodwood Cup, Sussex Stakes and Nassau Stakes) and other fan favourites such as the Stewards’ Cup and Golden Mile Handicap.

As highlighted by the Glorious Goodwood betting odds, this year’s event has the potential to make history as Battaash is aiming for a historic five-timer in the King George Qatar Stakes and is priced at 6/5 to achieve this. Unfortunately, Stradivarius had to pull out of the Goodwood Cup at the last minute due to the ground conditions, so they will be unable to achieve the same feat.

Royal Ascot

The June festival at Ascot is not only one of the key sporting events of the summer, it’s also one of the most important social gatherings. The roots of the festival can be traced back to the 1700s when the first four-day meeting was held. The signature Gold Cup was added in 1807 and has remained the feature race ever since, taking centre stage on the third day of the festival. A procession of Royal carriages has greeted the crowds along the straight mile every race day since 1825. King George IV was the first to enact this tradition which has been honoured by members of the Royal family including the Queen ever since.

The event’s key races include the Queen Anne Stakes, the King’s Stand Stakes, the St James’s Palace Stakes, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, the Gold Cup, the Commonwealth Cup, the Coronation Stakes and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes. The showpiece race is the Gold Cup which was won by Subjectivist in 2021, breaking Stradivarius’ three-year winning streak. As a result, Yeats remains the only horse to have won the race four times.

Ebor Festival

The Ebor Festival at York racecourse concludes the major flat racing season and is one of the most popular events amongst racegoers. The Ebor Handicap was first established in 1843 and remains the showpiece race of the four-day meeting and the most valuable flat handicap in Europe. Other key races include the Yorkshire Oaks, the Nunthorpe Stakes, and the International Stakes, which has the venue’s biggest prize fund of the season.

An honourable mention should also go to Epsom, which hosts the Derby Stakes in June each year. The race was first run in 1780 and remains Britain’s richest flat horse race. These are the must-see summer events for avid fans of UK horse racing.
