For the last few years, the colour grey has dominated wall painting trends. Most likely, it will stay that way for the next years to come. However, there are signs of overcoming the grey habit, Pantone, the greatest colour authority in the world, picked as the colour of the year 2021 actually two colours – ultimate grey (the most regular mid-grey in the palette) and illuminating, strong canary yellow.
That is one way to break through grey dominance – adding bold colours to counter it. Colourful art prints in frames would do the job fine. If your walls are already grey, there is a lot of post-impressionist art that uses rich yellows, orange, red which would bring so much needed vividness to the interior.
Dulux, a popular wall paint manufacturer, chose a different approach to break the routine. Their colour of the year is yet another neutral, in fact, it is a mix of greyish tones overlapped by brownish earthy shade.
Again, Brave Ground (that’s its commercial name) works perfectly with contrasting colours as all neutrals do. Bright colours of modern art, for example, brave paintings by Paul Gauguin from his Tahitian period, would bring freshness and light to the environment dimmed by such peaceful ochre.
Apparently, pairing grey walls with brave counterbalanced accents is this year’s thing. Touch of brighter blues in Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night, 1889 or blues and minty greens in his beautiful Irises in the Garden, 1889 would do the trick.
Our concerns for the environment make us going green, quite literally. Having olive, sage, lime, mint, pistachio shades as backdrops in different interiors is now a regular design option. Finally, mighty reds and brazen pinks. They are regarded as difficult colours in home design but pairing them with greyish neutrals would not set out the impossible challenge. Framed wall art with red tones is a good starting point for people who like experimenting.
