A day in your writing life.
My writing days are consistently inconsistent and entirely dependent on how much time I have, where I am in the process, and what other projects I’m juggling. In an ideal state, or if I’m on a tight deadline, I’ll load up multiple monitors with the active draft, my outline, separate notes, and some instrumental music (lyrically dense stuff pulls me away).
With a book like Space Holes, there’s a fair amount of planning involved as a lot of the humor is self-referential. Jokes will be set up in early chapters to have punchlines roll throughout the middle or end of the book. As much of the book satirizes the lunacy of everyday life, I have a running log of situations I’ve encountered that I want to turn into something in the book. Sometimes it’s just one word and that’s enough to remind me exactly of what I want to pull in and how I want to shape it. Other times I’ll have exact dialog scripted and need a place to insert it.
All of those notes, jokes, and concepts get baked into an extensive outline. I’ll usually use something like Google Sheets (basically PowerPoint) to break out each chapter’s highlights into its own slide or two. I find that an easier way to manage a large story than a lengthy word-processor based outline.
Once the big outline is done, I start drafting based on the concepts for each chapter. This part usually takes on a mind of its own and I like to let the story steer itself when I can, so long as I’m still hitting the key elements to keep the plot cohesive and the joke delivery on point.
If I can have an hour or two to write straight through, that’s a perfect scenario. But more often, I’m taking fifteen minutechunks here and there to knock out a paragraph or jot down an idea. Having all of the documents on the cloud makes that process much easier as I can jump in from anywhere.
