Twitch has been operational since 2011 and continues to show signs of further growth. Originally created as a platform for online and video gaming enthusiasts to interact and share experiences under the guise of Justin.tv, it was later rebranded to Twitch and sold on to Amazon in an all-cash deal worth almost $1 billion back in 2014.
Although there is an underlying feeling that Twitch’s viewership may have already peaked, there’s been signs of life in the last 12 months. In June 2024, the seven-day average for Twitch viewers stood at 2.253 million users. As of January 2025, that figure has risen to 2.434 million users, according to the reliable TwitchTracker platform.
The renaissance of Twitch may well be in part to the rise of a quartet of niche streaming communities which have seen meteoric growth in recent times. Within these and many other Twitch communities, there’s also a raft of affiliates aiming to make revenue from subscriptions, “Bits” and ad revenue. Below, we shine a spotlight on four niches on Twitch and what makes them so special for viewers.
Virtual Tabletop Role-Playing Games
Tabletop role-playing games, led by Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), have seen a dramatic resurgence, and Twitch has played a significant role in their revival. Channels like Critical Role—a live-streamed D&D campaign featuring professional voice actors—have skyrocketed in popularity, drawing tens of thousands of live viewers per session.
The appeal lies in the storytelling, creativity, and camaraderie that TTRPG streams provide. Viewers are transported into intricate fantasy worlds crafted by talented game masters, following the unpredictable adventures of players’ characters. The participatory nature of these games resonates deeply with Twitch audiences, many of whom contribute ideas or fan art to enhance the experience.
This niche has become a gateway for newcomers to discover tabletop games and join a growing global community of players.
Health and Fitness
For those looking to make 2025 the year that you lose weight or reach peak physical condition, Twitch’s health and fitness community is an engaging and motivating place to be. With a distinct emphasis on personal wellness and at-home workouts, the health and fitness community on Twitch offers motivational content, including nutritional and exercise advice.
Many of Twitch’s health and fitness streamers, like JakeNBakeLive and Knut, are now genuine personalities in the space. These streamers have also harnessed the power of the Twitch platform by encouraging users to tune in and ask live questions in real time, or even complete their exercises alongside their favourite streamers. Twitch has also been the home to many charity fitness events and challenges, which continue to help raise money for good causes worldwide.
Poker
The online poker scene has benefitted from a renaissance on Twitch. The Twitch poker community is now awash with poker personalities, many of whom are world-renowned professionals who have played the game live and online for years, if not decades.
Many of the well-established online poker rooms like PokerStars have their own Twitch channel, where viewers can tune in to learn how to play poker from many of its brand ambassadors, which form Team PokerStars. These include Lex Veldhuis and Spraggy, both of whom often live stream their online poker tournaments, giving you front-row tickets to the biggest events and an eye into their respective strategies.
Poker has dual appeal on Twitch. Casual viewers can sit back and revel in the suspense and intensity of the big pots and high-stakes bluffs. Meanwhile, poker buffs and aspiring professionals can acquaint themselves with the game’s nuances to improve their own poker theory and strategies.
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)
ASMR content has surged on Twitch, captivating audiences seeking relaxation and stress relief. Creators in this niche use microphones and props to produce soothing sounds—such as whispers, tapping, and crinkling—to trigger a calming sensation for viewers.
ASMR’s rise on Twitch is fuelled by its ability to provide an immersive experience. Popular streamers like Amouranth and AngelicaASMR have mastered the art of connecting with their audience through personalized triggers and live requests. The streams are often described as therapeutic, helping viewers unwind after a long day.
What makes ASMR unique is its adaptability; it can range from role-play scenarios to themed soundscapes, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Its combination of relaxation and creativity continues to attract new viewers daily.
