Recording artist, philanthropist, and recovery advocate Hilary Roberts returns today with her most vulnerable release to date, “Cutting Ties,” available now on all digital streaming platforms, alongside its official music video premiering today on YouTube.
Following the uplifting message of her Never Too Late EP, Roberts takes listeners on a far more intimate journey with “Cutting Ties,” a powerful piano-driven ballad about surviving abuse, breaking free from toxic relationships, and choosing self-love over fear. Inspired by her own experiences, the song captures the difficult but life-changing decision to walk away from people who no longer deserve a place in your life
Written from a deeply personal place, “Cutting Ties” reflects Roberts’ journey of healing after years of enduring emotional manipulation and abuse within her own family. Rather than focusing on anger, the song becomes an anthem of self-respect, resilience, and emotional freedom for anyone who has struggled to leave unhealthy relationships behind.
“‘Cutting Ties’ was written after the last straw of horrible abuse within my family,” says Roberts. “This song is for anyone who has tolerated abuse in any form for too long and finally has to walk away to be free from the toxicity. When someone who has experienced trauma and codependency chooses to cut ties, it’s an act of self-preservation. This song is about being brave enough to choose self-love, self-respect, and self-protection.”
The video opens with Roberts trapped inside a glass dome, physically restrained by cables that symbolize emotional bondage and years of manipulation. As the story unfolds, she moves in a yellow dress that represents the process of coming back to life and breaking free. Observing two contrasting worlds – one reflecting toxicity and the other freedom – before finally emerging into open landscapes dressed in flowing white, symbolizing healing, peace, and reclaiming her identity. The final scenes capture Roberts standing confidently within the wings of a butterfly mosaic, completing her journey of transformation.
