With warmer temperatures finally arriving and spring cleaning in full swing, many Brits are turning their attention to one often-overlooked home improvement task: cleaning their windows.
Over the past 7 days, searches for ‘easiest way to clean windows’ have surged by 950%, and even more niche queries like ‘clean windows with vinegar’ are up 350%.*
To help homeowners get their windows sparkling, Geoff Clarkson, window specialist at Express Bi-Folding Doors shares his simple hacks for cleaning windows for a streak-free finish:
- Dust first with a microfibre cloth
Before reaching for the cleaning spray, remove dust and debris from the glass and window frames using a microfibre cloth or a duster. This prevents dirt from turning into a muddy mess when mixed with water.
- Half water and half vinegar cleaning solution
For a streak-free finish, a simple mix of half water and half white vinegar works wonders. If you prefer a shop-bought option, choose a streak-free window cleaner. Avoid using too much soap, as it can leave smears.
- Use a microfibre cloth or squeegee
When applying your cleaning solution, use a smooth, microfibre cloth or a squeegee for best results. Always wipe in one direction (horizontal or vertical) to prevent streaks and ensure a crystal-clear finish.
- Don’t forget the window frames
While the glass takes centre stage, window frames can also accumulate grime over time. Clean them using a mix of lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh chemicals that could strip the paint or damage the material.
- Use an extendable squeegee for hard-to-reach windows
For high-up windows, such as Velux skylights, use an extendable squeegee to ensure a safe and thorough clean. If condensation or mould appears around these windows, a mould-resistant cleaning spray can help prevent future build-up.
