As the hot weather really starts to kick in and long-haul flights to hotter countries start to pick up, K-Beauty expert and Skin Cupid CEO and Founder, Melody Yuan, is warning passengers to reconsider the popular trend of in-flight skincare routines.
While social media has glamorised everything from sheet masks to multi-step routines at 30,000 feet, experts say these habits could be doing the opposite of what travellers intend.
“Just think about it – you’re trapped in a flying metal box with hundreds of other passengers, all breathing in and out the same circulated air,” says Yuan. “That air is full of dust, bacteria and irritants.
“So while you might think you’re helping your skin by applying serums or cleansing while in the air, what you’re actually doing is trapping these irritants and causing congestion. Also, what a lot of people don’t realise is that airplane air is incredibly dry, which makes your skin barrier vulnerable during those hours you’re on the plane.”
Here’s what else Yuan recommends to people about to hop on a flight:
- “Start before you leave the house by double cleansing before heading out for any journey. This ensures your face is completely clean before layering on hydrators. Starting with a clean, well-prepped canvas helps your skin stay balanced and resilient throughout the flight.”
- “Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! I recommend using the Purcell 24/7 mist spray. This spray is amazing when it comes to providing a base layer of hydration, and given that the air is so dry on planes, it will really help your skin barrier to retain its moisture during your flight. Plus, it’s easy and hygienic to apply at your seat.”
- “After using a hydrating mist, you should then go in with a good serum. A good serum will help calm, hydrates, and also possesses antibacterial properties that are perfect for combating potential breakouts.”
- “Finally, I love telling people to use the Medicube Collagen Night Wrapping Mask while flying, because it seals all the moisture into your skin while shielding it from the bacteria and dust that are ever-present on planes. What’s so great about this product is that if you’re on a long-haul flight, you can leave it on overnight – when you wake up, just peel it off, and your skin will look perfect!”
“This routine has helped keep my own skin clear and healthy every time I fly. When you reach your destination, instead of experiencing dryness, redness, or travel-induced pimples, you’ll have clear, glowing skin – and be ready for your adventure!”
