New performance benchmark data analyzing nearly 1,800 ad campaigns shows a clear shift in the paid social landscape: traffic on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) is getting cheaper, but turning those clicks into paying customers is becoming harder work.
According to a recent report by Search Engine Land, traffic campaigns saw Click-Through Rates (CTR) jump 12.87% year-over-year to 1.93%, while average Cost-Per-Click (CPC) fell 14.29% to $0.60 (around £0.45).
For UK small business owners who stepped away from Meta ads due to rising costs, these numbers offer a compelling reason to take another look. However, the data hides a crucial catch for anyone trying to capture real leads.
The Data at a Glance
- Traffic Campaign CTR: Up 12.87% YoY (to 1.93%)
- Traffic Campaign CPC: Down 14.29% YoY (to $0.60 / ~£0.45)
- Lead Campaign CPC: Down 6.25% YoY (to $1.80 / ~£1.35)
- Cost Per Lead (CPL): Virtually unchanged, down just 0.98% YoY (to $27.39 / ~£20.50)
Note: Industry variance is massive. While traffic CPC fell by nearly 40% for real estate and hospitality, retail and gifts saw CPCs jump by over 70%.
Why Cheaper Clicks Aren’t Yielding Cheaper Leads
The numbers reveal an important operational disconnect. While getting users to click on a lead campaign became cheaper (CPC fell 6.25%), the actual Cost Per Lead barely budged (down just 0.98%).
In plain terms: getting someone to click on your ad is getting easier, but getting them to convert on your site is where the friction lives. The bottleneck has officially moved off the ad feed and onto your website’s landing page.
How UK Small Businesses Should Respond
1. Fix Your Post-Click Experience First If your ads are getting clicks but no sales or enquiries, don’t blame the ad creative—look at your site.
- Match your message: Ensure the exact hook or headline from your ad is instantly visible above the fold on your page.
- Remove mobile friction: Over 80% of Meta users browse on mobile. Keep forms short, clear out heavy full-screen pop-ups, and make sure pages load in under two seconds.
- Offer clear value: Give visitors an obvious, low-friction next step rather than expecting an instant, high-ticket sale on session one.
2. Re-Test Paused Top-of-Funnel Campaigns Because both CTR and CPC improved simultaneously, Meta isn’t just serving cheaper, lower-quality impressions—engagement is genuinely up. If you paused brand awareness or web traffic campaigns 12 to 18 months ago because the economics stopped working, pull your proven ad creative back into rotation to re-benchmark against current figures.
3. Use Social Traffic Upstream Instead of forcing Facebook ads to do the same heavy lifting as intent-driven channels like Google Search, use cheaper Meta traffic strategically upstream. Use social ads to introduce your brand, build custom retargeting pools, and capture top-of-funnel interest, then convert that warmed-up traffic through search or direct email follow-ups.
