Most of the UK’s major theme parks are set to wrap up their main season on or around 1st November, including Thorpe Park, Chessington World of Adventures and Drayton Manor, while Alton Towers will follow with its final fireworks weekend from 6th-8th November.
This makes October half-term, which falls from Monday 26th to Friday 30th October for many families, one of the final opportunities to experience the UK’s biggest rides before they go into winter hibernation. However, with families across the country having the same idea, the final weeks of the season can also bring bigger crowds and longer queues.
The best day to visit during October half-term
According to AttractionTickets.com, Tuesday 27th October could be one of the best days to visit during the half-term break.
Chris Bradshaw is a bookings expert and has over 10 years of experience working specifically with theme parks at AttractionTickets.com. He says:
“October is one of the last opportunities of the year to visit many of the UK’s biggest theme parks, so we naturally see families trying to fit in one final trip before the winter closures.
I’d always recommend visiting theme parks on a Tuesday if you can. We know that historically Tuesdays do tend to be one of the quieter days when it comes to visitor numbers. This is because visitors from the weekend have already left, and those taking midweek breaks tend to arrive from Wednesday onwards.
Based on this, if you’re trying to figure out the best day to visit during the October half-term, I would opt for Tuesday 27th October. It goes without saying that visitor numbers will still be a lot higher given the school holidays, but avoiding weekend peak and arriving first thing in the morning when the park opens should make a difference.
If you’re one of the lucky ones who aren’t restricted by the school holidays, I would highly recommend going for the Tuesday morning prior – Tuesday 20th October. This will likely be one of the final dates for a quieter visit before the season comes to an end.
It’s also worth noting that Scotland’s October half-term falls between 12th and 16th October, and for some councils all the way up until 23rd October. Based on this, Tuesday 13th October would also be a particularly good time for Scottish families looking to avoid the busiest periods.”
